Endocrinology
Endocrinology is a branch of medicine that deals with diseases of the endocrine glands. The endocrine glands (pituitary gland, thyroid gland, pancreas, parathyroid gland, adrenal glands, gonads) are organs that secrete various hormones. These hormones have their own specific effects and affect a whole range of metabolic and other processes in the body (e.g. regulation of glucose levels, metabolic processes, calcium levels, ion metabolism, body growth, coat quality and growth, reproduction, etc.). Since the effects of endocrine glands on the body are complex, the symptoms of poor function are also very diverse. Owners often notice increased fluid intake, weight gain, poor coat quality, reluctance to exercise, chills, skipping heat, etc.
At our workplace, we perform blood tests, functional tests and other examinations that lead to the diagnosis of possible endocrinopathy (e.g. hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Cushing's syndrome, diabetes mellitus).
We will suggest the most appropriate treatment to the owners (medication, surgical solution, long-term monitoring). In acute cases of metabolic disruption (ketoacidosis, Addison's crisis, etc.), we provide patients with intensive therapy.
