Small mammal medicine

Small mammals are a diverse group of our patients including ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, small rodents - rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, hamsters and gerbils, African hedgehogs and marsupials. Wild relatives - hares, wild rabbits, squirrels, hedgehogs and wild rodents are under the care of wildlife rescue stations. We provide first aid.

Diseases of small mammals

Common procedures in these patients requiring general anesthesia are dental treatment (especially rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and gerbils), castration, cesarean section, and removal of neoplasms (rats).

The most gentle method of anesthesia in small mammals is inhalation anesthesia with isoflurane in combination with analgesics (we often use a combination of preparations with different mechanisms of action). This allows us to minimize the side effects of anesthetics and most patients wake up within 5 minutes after the procedure.

Ferrets

We recommend vaccination against rabies and distemper, in adult ferrets combined with an annual preventive examination.

for ferrets older than 5 years, preventive examinations after 6 months due to the more frequent occurrence of metabolic and tumor diseases

For non-breeding animals, we perform surgical and hormonal castration with the depot preparation Suprelorin.
